Pinochle is a captivating card game that is played using either a 48- or 80-card deck consisting of 9s, 10s, jacks, queens, kings, and aces. The game involves bidding, melding, and trick-taking in a repetitive sequence. Players earn points by melding various combinations of cards and by winning tricks.

In this version of the game, one human player assumes the role of South and plays alongside a computer partner (North) while competing against two computer opponents (West and East).

Bidding: Each player estimates the number of points they can earn with their hand and places their bid accordingly. The bidding begins with the player to the left of the dealer and continues in a clockwise direction. Players who choose to pass are excluded from bidding for that hand. Typically, a high bid would be around 35 points (for a 48-card deck) or 60 points (for an 80-card deck). The highest bidder determines the trump suit for that hand and may also exchange cards with their partner.

Melding: Points are awarded to players for displaying various combinations of cards. A run or straight in the trump suit is worth 15 points. Having an ace from each suit earns 10 points. Pinochle, which consists of the queen of spades and jack of diamonds, earns 4 points, or 30 points for double pinochle (two sets of each card).

Tricks: The game begins with the high bidder leading a card, and each player taking turns in a clockwise direction. A trick consists of four cards. The player who plays the highest-ranked card in the lead suit wins the trick and is awarded 1 point for each ace, ten, or king in that trick.

Scoring: If the high bidder fails to achieve their bid (the total points earned from melding and tricks is less than the bid amount), the bid amount is deducted from their team's score. The game continues until one team surpasses the required score to win.
